Light reaching the eyes helps time the circadian system; ultraviolet B reaching enough uncovered skin can contribute to vitamin D production. Those are related parts of the outdoor environment, but they are not interchangeable. A field study of 109 office workers found that greater circadian-effective light exposure in the morning was associated with shorter sleep-onset latency and better sleep quality, especially in winter. It was an observational workplace study, not proof that one exact morning-light dose fixes sleep. It still adds context to a very modern mismatch: many people spend the brightest part of the day in dim buildings and the darkest part of the night looking into bright devices.
This is why I do not want sunlight reduced to a supplement argument. Vitamin D is measurable and important, but daylight also carries timing information, usually gets us moving, and gives the eyes a view farther away than a screen. A capsule can be useful when a clinician and blood work point that way. It cannot recreate an outdoor morning.

UVB rays from the sun help the skin make vitamin D. Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin and hormone-like nutrient that helps the body absorb calcium and supports bone health. Low vitamin D status has been associated with worse outcomes in a lot of health research, but we should be careful with the language. Low vitamin D can be part of a bigger pattern: less outdoor time, poorer diet, darker winters, aging, certain medical conditions, or less overall health. Still, vitamin D matters, and it is worth knowing your levels.
Ways to support vitamin D include sunlight, food, and supplementation when appropriate. Food sources include fatty fish like salmon, eggs, fortified dairy or other fortified foods, and some animal foods. If you live in a dark winter climate, work indoors all day, cover most skin, have darker skin, or have a known deficiency, talk with your doctor about blood work and supplementation.
Natural Ways To Support Vitamin D
The first-principles version is simple: vitamin D status comes from sunlight, food, supplements when needed, and the body's ability to absorb and use it. The NIH vitamin D fact sheet notes that the Recommended Dietary Allowance for most adults through age 70 is 15 mcg, or 600 IU, per day. Adults over 70 are listed at 20 mcg, or 800 IU, per day. The FDA Daily Value used on labels is 20 mcg, or 800 IU, for adults and children age 4 and older. That means percentages on labels are usually based on 800 IU, not the 600 IU adult RDA.
Food can help, but vitamin D is not spread evenly across the food supply. According to the NIH vitamin D table, one tablespoon of cod liver oil is about 1,360 IU, or 170% of the Daily Value. Three ounces of cooked rainbow trout is about 645 IU, or 81%. Three ounces of cooked sockeye salmon is about 570 IU, or 71%. A half cup of UV-exposed white mushrooms is about 366 IU, or 46%. One cup of fortified milk is usually around 120 IU, or 15%. Fortified soy, almond, or oat milk is often around 100 to 144 IU, or 13% to 18%. A large scrambled egg is about 44 IU, or 6%, and the vitamin D is in the yolk.
That breakdown matters because it keeps the conversation honest. If someone is indoors all day and only eating an occasional egg, they probably are not getting a lot of vitamin D from food. If someone eats fatty fish, uses fortified foods, gets outdoor light, and checks blood work when appropriate, that is a more complete strategy. I like natural routes first, but I do not think "natural" should become a religion. If labs show deficiency, supplementation can be a practical tool under medical guidance.
The free version is still the anchor. Sunlight is not a product. A morning walk outside is light, movement, air, circadian rhythm, and mental space all at once. It is one of those basic signals readily available and already provided to us by God. That does not mean ignoring food, blood work, sunscreen, or supplementation when needed. It means do not skip the basic signal and then try to buy your way around never going outside.
Sun Safety
Sunlight is useful. Sunburn is not the goal. Too much ultraviolet light can damage skin and increase skin cancer risk. This is where people get weirdly tribal online. The point is not to fear the sun or worship the sun. The point is to respect it.

At Night, Do The Opposite
Sunlight in the morning is only half the rhythm. Darkness at night is the other half. Turn down lights as bedtime approaches. Avoid blasting bright overhead LEDs late at night. Reduce phone, TV, and computer light before bed. Blue light and bright light at night can suppress melatonin and push the body in the wrong direction. I use blue-light strategy at night because I want my body to know the workday is over.
The part I keep coming back to is not one vitamin. It is timing.
